Taussig Manasse portraits

These Studio Manasse portraits capture the 'new woman’ of the 1920s and 30s: confident and provocative.

Husband and wife Adorja’n von Wlassics (1893-1946) and Olga Solarics (1896-1969) ran the Manasse Foto-Salon in Vienna from 1922-1938. The first Manasse portraits appeared in 1924 in movie magazines, and the studio also employed retouching and overpainting of its subjects.

These images are part of the NFSA Taussig Collection: thousands of classic European and American film stills from the beginning of cinema to the 1930s. A postwar migrant from Austria, Hans Taussig developed the collection during his early career in film and journalism in Europe.
